I went for a smog test. Engine light was remained on on the dashboard and not going away. Still they performed the smog test (engine light on means smog test will never pass, I found that out later) and took 50 dollars for failing the car in less than five minutes. They quoted 400 just for diagnostics, fix on top. I took the car next day to a different shop. They cleaned the catalytic converter and pass the car in no time for 60 dollars including certificate. In past the place has really helped me with good service.
Ashish Dave, By California law, if your check engine light is on when you come in and ask specifically for a smog test, we have to test it that way. As far as your diagnostic, the code that came up was for your evaporative system. That requires a tedious test begining with a smoke test, then functionality test of the purge cylinder, checking the fuel pressure sensor, etc. This test takes about two and a half hours to test the entire system. The catalytic converter is on the exhaust side of your emissions system and has nothing to do with your evaporative system. Also a catalytic converter is either bolted in place between your exhaust manifold and muffler or is welded in place and would have to be cut out to access.
