Carmelia, Just because you have a code doesn't mean you know how to fix it. A common code is a P030X where the X is the cylinder number of a misfire code. You know the problem area, but not the cause. Is it a fuel injector, spark plug, plug wire, no spark, etc? You could replace all of the above and spend more than a hundred of dollars if you have the ability to perform the repairs yourself. Having a professional mechanic diagnose what the root cause can save you lots of money. It's like when you go to the doctor for a pain in your arm. They order an x-ray to make sure it's not a brand ken bone or an MRI to ensure its not ligament damage. Two different diagnostic tests to handle the same problem.
