Different Types of Car Fluid Leaks

Fluid leak underneath the front of a car, poured on cement

Considering that all automobiles rely on multiple fluids to function, everyone is bound to experience a fluid leak. Some liquid leaks are more of a headache than others; nevertheless, leaks are never a good indication. Here are the various vehicle fluids that your car may leak:

Coolant

Coolant leaks are often found to be bright green, orange, or pink. Leaking coolant can sometimes be considered normal for older cars, but modern vehicles are created with preventative traits. Your vehicle may be facing an overheating issue if its coolant is leaking.

Oil

A dark brown or black puddle is usually a common sign of an oil leak. Oil leaks transpire around the oil pan and in gaskets that are located near or in the engine. If an oil leak occurs and puddles under your car, it means that your gasket is damaged and must be inspected by a licensed professional.

Transmission

Transmission fluid is often a pinkish-red color, so you'll probably have no problems detecting it. It is imperative to have your vehicle's transmission inspected and analyzed to determine what kind of repairs you need. Transmission repairs, rebuilds, or replacements are not cheap.

Power Steering

If the puddle contains a liquid that smells similar to transmission fluid, it may be the power steering fluid. Power steering fluid can flow from the engine bay and indicates that you will encounter steering malfunction.

Brake

Brake fluid is often perceived as a bright color with a pungent smell. If you detect this smell around your car, you're likely to encounter braking problems. You will need to have a technician inspect your braking system immediately.

Windshield Wiper Fluid

Wiper fluid is usually translucent pink or blue in appearance. These leaks typically happen when the tubes to your wiper fluid are damaged.
