What Can Wear Down Tires Prematurely?

Close of a vehicle's tire, dirty

Not only are tires essential to the performance of your vehicle, but they are also costly to replace. As such, you will want to ensure that you are doing whatever it takes to take care of them and extend their life expectancy. This will give you many thousands of miles of safe and comfortable driving. Here are some general tips designed to help you keep your tires from wearing down prematurely.

Check the Air Pressure

If your tires are under-inflated, the tread will begin to wear on the outside edges. Putting too much air in your tires can cause a problem as well. When this happens, you will notice that the middle of the tire itself will have worn out tread. Because of this, you will want to check the air pressure often to keep your tires from wearing out too quickly.

Make Sure You Rotate the Tires

Tire rotation is also important. If you do not have regular tire rotations performed, it is quite likely that you will notice two of your tires wearing out much more quickly than the other two. Which two tires wear out more quickly will depend on whether your car is front-wheel drive or not. One way to keep this from happening is to move the tires around every 5,000 to 8,000 miles.

Proper Wheel Alignment is Important

If you notice your car pulling heavy to one side or the other, then your tires are likely in need of an alignment. A technician will perform an adjustment to your wheels to make sure that all four are parallel to each other. It is also important that the tires remain perpendicular to the road at all times. This will help reduce premature wear on your tires.

Check the Suspension

If your tires are worn out far before they should be, then your suspension could be the culprit. If your suspension is worn out, then the alignment of your wheels will shift prematurely. This causes your car to bump along down the road, causing uneven tread wear.
