Today, most of our vehicles have a single yet powerful belt to run many different car components, and it is called the serpentine belt. This long snake-like rubber belt is a pulley connected to the vehicle's crankshaft and powered by the engine. This is why it can sometimes be referred to as the engine belt.   The engine belt loops through and drives essential components like your alternator, air conditioning compressor, power steering pump, water pump, and more.
